The Retrophones

The Retrophones are a full on funk band, specialising in 1970's classics. They formed in 2011 when they played at the Rowchester Music Festival and they play to enthusiastic audiences at clubs and private parties in and around Edinburgh and the Borders and, more recently in 2015 and 2016, at the Belladrum Tartan Heart Music Festival and they have been honoured to have been joined on occasion by two of Scotland's top jazz artists.

They play as a top end nine piece act and have in their arsenal a superb array of classics of the genre from such musical funk luminaries as Chic, KC and the Sunshine, James Brown and the Commodores and even play their own funky versions of songs such as Happy and Get Lucky. The band can alternate between disco diva dance of Chic and Sister Sledge though impact set piece James Brown numbers and heavy duty funk as played by Kool and the Gang and the Commodores. The band showcases each band member with jazzy improvised trumpet, sax, trombone and other solos and the singer Sarah Barron trained at the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow.
