Jemma Brown

Jemma studied with Patricia MacMahon and obtained a BMus (hons) from the University of Glasgow. She completed her PgDip, MMus (performance), MMus (opera) and MOpera with Kathleen McKellar Ferguson at the Alexander Gibson Opera School at the RSAMD with grateful assistance from the RSAMD scholarship trust, Donald Dewar Arts Awards and the Fenton Arts Trust. She now studies with Judith Howarth.

Jemma has performed contemporary works as a soloist in the 2015 Turner Prize nominated Doug by Janice Kerbel, at Max at 75 (Maxwell Davies/Dark Angels), Plug (Murphy/Am Turme) and with the RSNO (Lindberg/Graffiti|). She created the role of Marga the Mesmerist (Boyle/Kaspar Hauser) and performed Cally Spooner's Damning Evidence Illicit Behaviour Seemingly Insurmountable Great Sadness Terminated In Any Manner at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art as part of British Art Show 8.

She made her Proms debut in 2010 with the BBCSSO and Donald Runnicles and was a Britten Pears Young Artist in 2011 as Lady Billows in Albert Herring.

Operatic Roles include Lady Billows (Britten/Albert Herring), Filipjevna (Tchaikovsky/Eugene Onegin), Gertrude (Humperdinck/Hansel & Gretel), Waltraute (Wagner/Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung), Erda (Wagner/Das Rheingold and Siegfried), Second Norn (Wagner/Götterdämmerung), Fricka (Wagner/Das Rheingold) Marcellina (Mozart/Figaro), Meg Page (Verdi/Falstaff) and Donna Elvira (Mozart/Don Giovanni).

Roles performed in concert include Amneris (Verdi/Aida), Klytaemnestra (Strauss/Elektra), Die Amme (Strauss/Frau ohne Schatten), Brünnhilde (Wagner/Walküre) and Gutrune (Wagner/Götterdämmerung). Upcoming roles include Primadonna/Ariadne (Strauss/Ariadne auf Naxos).

Jemma and her duo partner Maryam Sherhan are proud alumni of Live Music Now!, a scheme set up by Yehudi Menuhin to help young professional musicians at the beginning of their careers and to take quality live music into venues lacking in live performance, such as schools, nursing homes and prisons. They have given recitals at the National Museum of Scotland, Music at Paxton, Shetland Arts, Westbourne music, and the Usher Hall a have participated in residencies at and Aberdeen International Youth Festival and at EMS creative exchange in Crear. They made their Edinburgh International Festival debut in 2016 performing Wagner and Strauss lieder as part of the songlines project.
